We provide high quality residential outdoor education courses for schools, colleges and youth groups as well as corporate training, team building events and group accommodation for adults.

Current Vacancies

Administrator (37 hrs per week)

Salary: £18,795- £19,171

We are looking for an Administrator to work with colleagues in a small team to provide administration for all areas of Derwent Hill’s operation including finance, marketing, sales, bookings and course delivery.

The ideal candidate will be a good communicator, well organised with excellent attention to detail and highly computer literate with expertise in MS Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook.

We are keen to match the job to the skills of the successful candidate so although we are looking for an “all-rounder” in terms of administrative skills, knowledge and experience, we are interested to hear from candidates who have specialist skills, particularly in financial and marketing administration.

Apprentice Outdoor Education Tutors x 2 (15 month fixed term contracts)

Salary:  National Minimum Wage for apprentices: £144.30 per week  (£3.90 per hour)

We are seeking to appoint two individuals with the aptitude and ability to undertake a Level 3 apprentice programme of on and off the job training and to gain experience as Outdoor Education Tutors, in partnership with Kendal College.

Hours of work:  37 hours per week over 5 days, annualised (some weekend and Bank Holiday working is required)

In addition to working with groups in the outdoors, you will contribute to a rota of evening and overnight on-call duties for which Board and Lodging in single rooms is provided free of charge.

Apprentices are expected to live in.


  • Learn and develop the necessary skills and experience to deliver safe, high quality outdoor education and training courses for children, young people and adults
  • Gain great experience of working in a number of different areas within an Outdoor Education Centre, including maintaining outdoor equipment & supporting venue staff
  • Get support to achieve a Level 3 qualification in Activity Leadership
  • National Governing Body training and assessment courses included
  • Receive In house training and development
  • Board and Lodging in single rooms – free of charge in return for programmed evening and overnight duties.

 Associate Tutors (Freelance)

We are interested in hearing from freelance tutors who are passionate about outdoor education and training to join our established team. You must be able to work on your own initiative and with a variety of different clients including school pupils of all ages and recreational groups. The centre is open seven days a week with a greater concentration of available work at weekends. You should be available for periods of work throughout the year, particularly between April and October, and to undergo a period of induction. As an Associate Tutor you must be registered self-employed and have your own indemnity insurance.

In return, we offer a great working environment with competitive rates of pay (currently £110 per day with additional payments for evening work).
