Derwent Hill is a busy, friendly Outdoor Education Centre set in idyllic surroundings in Portinscale, just outside Keswick, in Cumbria.

We provide high quality residential outdoor education courses for schools, colleges and youth groups as well as corporate training, team building events and group accommodation for adults.

Our approach is based on professional informality, and we pride ourselves on our flexibility, homely atmosphere, good food and inspiring setting.

Current Vacancies

Apprentice Outdoor Education Tutor 

We are seeking to appoint two individuals with the aptitude and ability to undertake a Level 3 apprentice programme, in partnership with Kendal College. The role involves both on and off the job training and gaining experience as an Outdoor Education Tutor. 

Job Title:  Apprentice Outdoor Education Tutor
Location:  Derwent Hill, Keswick, Cumbria CA12 5RD
Duration of post:  up to 15 months
Salary:  National Minimum Wage for apprentices: £6.39 per hour (18-20yrs) 

Hours of work:  37 hours per week over 5 days, including weekend and Bank Holiday working
In addition to working with groups in the outdoors, you will contribute to a rota of evening and overnight on-call duties for which Board and Lodging in single rooms is provided free of charge as Apprentices are expected to live in. 

Closing date: 22nd September 2023 

Apprentices are expected to live onsite and be a minimum of 18 years on their start date.

General Assistant (Permanent Variable Hours) 

Various hours are available including some evenings and weekends 

 Salary: £11.18 per hour and a holiday plusage payment of 15% 

The role of general assistant is varied and flexible and includes the cleaning of the centre, general housework, bar duties and the service of meals.

Associate Tutors (Freelance)

We are interested in hearing from freelance tutors who are passionate about outdoor education and training to join our established team. You must be able to work on your own initiative and with a variety of different clients including school pupils of all ages and recreational groups. The centre is open seven days a week with a greater concentration of available work at weekends. You should be available for periods of work throughout the year, particularly between April and October, and to undergo a period of induction. As an Associate Tutor you must be registered self-employed and have your own indemnity insurance.

In return, we offer a great working environment with competitive rates of pay (currently £120 per day with additional payments for evening work).

UK CC or BCU level 2 in both canoe and kayak (please get in touch if you have other paddle-sport qualifications)
