Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK)

Graduate Leadership case study

‘It's difficult to put into words just how positive an experience Derwent Hill is both physically and psychologically’ Clare Hoy, Nissan course delegate

Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK) has cemented itself as the largest and most successful car manufacturing plant in Europe, having made more than half a million vehicles in its 30th anniversary year.  It employs over 7,000 people and utilises over 40,000 people in its supply chain. The site is embracing the latest developments in autonomous drive technology and has become a leader in pioneering green technology.

NMUK follow the philosophy of Kai Zen (the principle of incremental and constant improvement) and as such are committed to investment, improvement and training of their staff.

Derwent Hill has worked with NMUK for over 15 years and has played a critical role in their staff training and development.  Our expertise in designing and delivering courses has led us to regularly working with a wide range of Nissan employees from apprentices, undergraduates and graduates through to team leaders and Senior Managers.  Our range of courses includes team development, leadership development, resilience and mindfulness, staff assessment and selection days, undergraduate and graduate development.

Our Graduate Leadership Development programme is specifically targeted at recent graduates and aims to give them the knowledge and opportunities necessary to practice leading a team in a non-sequential, demanding environment in order to improve their leadership skills ready to take back to the work place. The course objectives include:

  • an evaluation of  present leadership style and techniques in a variety of situations
  • observation, discussion and practise of alternative systems,  behaviours and styles of leadership
  • the matching of effective leadership styles, techniques and strategies to varying team leading situations
  • the identification and development of interpersonal skills in achieving a task by making the best use of individuals and the team
  • the development of an individual action plan

The course utilises a combination of classroom based theory sessions, experiential indoor and outdoor challenges and plenary reviews to establish key learning points and future developmental plans.  Each delegate goes away with a personal action plan for the future.

The leadership course content is delivered by our tutors in close consultation with Nissan, to ensure their specific needs are met.  Reviews are central to the continuous improvement of the courses to ensure the content continues to match the client requirement.
